Armin van Buuren turns the spotlight away from the DJ booth and onto the audience in a new 10-minute mini-documentary filmed during his A State of Trance residency at [UNVRS] Ibiza. Created in collaboration with professional psychotherapist Rachel Giddings, The Psychology of the Dancefloor examines what happens emotionally and psychologically when thousands of people share the same musical moment.

The film explores human connection, collective emotion and the sense of belonging that can emerge on a dancefloor, asking why music can create such strong bonds between complete strangers and why certain moments can stay with us long after the night is over.

The documentary is closely connected to Armin’s debut residency at [UNVRS], where he is celebrating 25 years of A State of Trance with five consecutive Monday shows, from Monday 7 September to Monday 5 October 2026, each built around an extended five-hour set. The format gives the Dutch artist the time to develop a complete musical narrative, while placing the audience at the centre of the experience.

A DJ is often at the centre of attention, but the real magic happens on the dancefloor” Armin explains in the film, which deliberately shifts the focus from the performer to the people experiencing the music together.

Founded as a radio show in 2001, A State of Trance has grown into a global platform reaching 44 million listeners across more than 80 countries. At [UNVRS], its 25th anniversary is being marked through a residency that puts that international community in the foreground.

The documentary is available to watch on YouTube, while the residency continues at [UNVRS] on Mondays until Monday 5 October 2026.
